Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don’t give only your care, but give your heart as well –Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Week 12!

This week we celebrated Jacob as our Star Student!

We are collecting new and unwrapped gifts for children in the Boyle Street area of Edmonton until December 16th.
We are also raising money for our foster children by raffling off VIP Parking and Seating for our Christmas concerts this year.

The choir did a great job entertaining the school at their concert.  We have many enthusiastic singers in our class.
We also have a very attentive and appreciative audience.
After a wonderful performance, we let our sillies out!
In social we compared the weather in Iqaluit, Meteghan and Saskatoon.
We also learned about the flags and flowers in each community.

In math we practiced our estimating skills.
We also worked on some tricky hundreds chart puzzles.

We ended our week with an Inuit presentation.

Stick for cutting snow blocks for iglu building, pana
Inuit knife, ulu
Wolverine Pelt
Seal skin
Polar Bear fur
Polar Bear tooth
Inuit boots, Gumiks

Snow goggles

Caribou antlers
We worked in a group to complete a traditional Inuit wall hanging.
Finally, we presented our wall hangings to our class.

Thank you to our volunteer helpers who came to spend the afternoon with us, Mr.  Huckabone, Mrs.  Knight, Mrs.  Gerling, and Mrs. Riess.

As usual, December will be a busy time in grade two as we prepare for the Advent season.  Before we break for the Christmas holidays, we will be preparing our hearts for the Christmas each morning with our school Advent calendar culminating with our final Advent celebration on Friday, Dec. 20th.

Next week we will celebrate our early out Wednesday as Sparkle & Shine Day.  Get dressed in your most festive of outfits.  The more sparkle the better!

Week 11!
This we celebrated McKenna as our Star Student!
McKenna proved that we get bigger as we get older by sharing a picture of her as a baby sitting in a bowl and sitting in the same bowl now.

We celebrated 50 days of school this week with Zero the Hero!

We continued to work on our numeracy skills by making numbers in a variety of ways using coins.
We also worked on ordering numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest.

We enjoyed The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs at our listening centre this week.

The students started working on their new science unit, Buoyancy and Boats with Miss Adams.

We sent our December book orders home early in an attempt to ensure that our book orders will be at school before the Christmas break.   Just a reminder that I can only accept cheques.

Enjoy the wonderful winter weather this weekend!

A mid-week note...
Wednesday is the last day to order poinsettias so please send in your orders tomorrow.
A Catholic Education mass will take place at 5:15pm on Saturday, November 23rd, 2013 at Our Lady of the Angels Church.

Picture orders are due tomorrow.
If you have an aardvark stuffy that you would be willing to donate to our classroom we would be very appreciative.   We need an Arnie Aardvark.  We're also collecting a star, car, jar, bar, barn, alarm clock, guitar or any other "ar" things that you can think of.  All of the items must be small enough to fit inside a shoebox.

Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed for the winter weather with mittens, hat, socks, snow pants and boots.

Enjoy the rest of our snowy week!

Week 10!

This week we celebrated Tayler as our star student!

We went to explore the books at the Reading Oasis Book Fair.  Mrs.  Buban always does such an amazing job preparing a wonderful book fair for us to enjoy!
We made our wish lists and shopped for some new books.

Maggie and her family kindly donated this book to our class which we enjoyed reading very much.  Nobody can resist a book about underwear!

We were Book Fair winners!  Our class was the lucky winner of these terrific books and Chloe got to pick some books to take home with her.

In math, we worked on balancing equations and finding equal numbers.
We also played a cool math game balancing equations on the Smart board. Number Balance is the link if you'd like to play this game at home.
We also discovered that it takes a long time to count to 56 using pennies.
We discovered that if you used dimes and pennies it didn't take as long to get to 56.
We discovered that if you used dimes, nickels and pennies to get to 56 it was even faster.
We also played a new game called Give The Dog A Bone.  It really tested what we new about our numbers to 100!
Click this link Give the Dog A Bone if you'd like to try this math game at home.

This week we had a visit from the John Howard Society who came to talk to us about being responsible citizens.  Thanks to Mrs. DeRosa for planning and organising this visit. To learn more about the John Howard Society please visit their website at http://www.johnhoward.org
During the presentation we heard the story Horton Lays An Egg.  Horton was a great example of being responsible even when things get tough!

For social this week Tripp shared some mittens made in Nunavut from seal and beaver fur given to him by his grandpa.

Also in social we started learning about the landforms in Nunavut, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan.

One of the most popular literacy centres our class has is the drama centre.  Every week the students are getting more and more creative with their presentations.  This week their readers theatre was about Remembrance Day.

2H and 4M worked together to create a Remembrance Day wreath that was presented during the Remembrance Day liturgy on Friday.
We also reflected and wrote about Remembrance Day.

A Pittance of Time is a short video to remind us of why we were not at school on Monday.

Thank you to all the grade two families for their support during  conferences and these first 10 weeks of the school year.  I hope you all enjoy a restful and enjoyable November break!
