Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don’t give only your care, but give your heart as well –Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Week 9!

We started out our week celebrating Pumpkin Day.
We predicted whether a pumpkin would float or sink.  Then we tested our pumpkin to see if we were correct.  We discovered that pumpkins float.
 We weighed our pumpkins.
We counted the ribs on our pumpkin.
We measured the circumference of our pumpkin.
We counted how many blocks the circumference of our pumpkin was.

We scooped out the insides of the pumpkin to get all the seeds out.
We counted all the seeds we could in 5 minutes.
We recorded our findings in our pumpkin observation booklet.
Finally, it was time to carve our pumpkins.
We did a great job carving such unique pumpkins!
In math this week we worked on making numbers with base tens.

Halloween finally arrived!  We visited all the other grade two classrooms to do Halloween activities.
In our classroom, we made spider hats.
We were very blessed with many treats from generous grade two families.  By the time I got my camera, most of the treats had been consumed.  Luckily, this mummy bottle survived long enough to have his picture taken.  Thank you to everyone who sent in Halloween treats!

Library date change!
Library this week will be on Tuesday due to Thursday's Halloween activities.  Please be sure to remind your child to pack their library books in their backpacks on Monday evening so that they can exchange their books on Tuesday instead of Thursday this week.

Week 8!

This week we celebrated Kayden as our Star Student.

We've been learning about bodies of water in social.
Canada has many beautiful and interesting communities.  We are learning about Iqaluit, Meteghan and Saskatoon.

St. Mary's Bay, Meteghan, Nova Scotia
We found Meteghan on the map.
The Atlantic Ocean in Eastern Canada.
Koojesse Inlet, Iqaluit, Nunavut
We found Iqaluit on the map.
Sylvia Grinnell River, Iqaluit, Nunavut
 South Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
We found Saskatoon on a map.

In religion we celebrated Friendship Day with all our grade two friends with a prayer celebration, lunch together and time to play.

In art this week we created Pasta Skeletons.

We created Super Sentences this week to practice adding details to our sentences.
Words underlined in purple are describing words(adjectives), words underlines in green are the person, place or thing(nouns), words underlines in blue are actions words(verbs), words underlined in orange tell us where and the words underlined in brown tell us when.

We continued to work on our numeracy skills and further explored ordinals in math.
We practiced skip counting with this cool video.

At listening centre we listened to a spooky Halloween story.
We are working on independent centres this week because I started Guided Reading with small groups of students .  This is an opportunity for the students to manage their time, independently read instructions and work without direct instruction from the teacher.  For some students this can be a challenging time.  You may see an increase in notes in the agenda letting you know how your child is using their centres time.  Please don't panic!  This will be temporary as the students learn how to manage their time and work effectively in groups to complete their tasks.

The upcoming week with Pumpkin Day and Halloween will be a busy and exciting one!

Halloween!
All students are welcome to get changed into their costumes after lunch.  The grade two students will celebrate Halloween with their grade two family after the Halloween Parade in the gym with a Halloween movie.  If you would like to send a snack or treat for your child to enjoy while they watch please feel free to send it along.  Due to several allergy alerts we will not be sharing snacks but for the safety of all the students we do ask that whatever you send for your child to enjoy, it is nut safe.  Also, if your child wants to bring individually wrapped nut safe Halloween treats for their friends that would be fine.

A Message from the Remembrance Day Liturgy Committee

Our Remembrance Day liturgy on Nov. 8th at 11:00am in the gym is fast approaching and we are in need of your help.  We will be celebrating all of the hard work, dedication and sacrifices that people who serve our country(soldiers, police, fire fighters, paramedics etc) have made.  If you are currently serving or have served our country we would love to have you come so we can honour you.  The students will be presenting a wreath to anyone who can come and help represent all of the hard working service men and women in our country.  Please email Mrs.  Arnott at nikkiv@eics.ab.ca if you are able to attend.

Week 7!

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend!  Although this week was only four days long, we managed to have another busy week.

We wrote about our Thanksgiving.  First, we brainstormed all our activities for the Thanksgiving weekend.  Then we planned out what we wanted to write about.
Finally, we transferred our work from our rough copy to our good copy.

This week the student enjoyed The Ned Show.

We used some of our time this week for "Ketchups and Pickles".  The students are divided up into two groups, "ketchups"  and "pickles".  If they are a "ketchup" the must use the designated time for catching up on unfinished activities.  If they are are "pickle"  they can pick an extra time activity to work on while the others finish their work.

In art this week we created fall hangings with an important  reminder about working hard and doing our best to attain our goals.  In grade two, we can do hard things and we can solve problems!

The students have been very busy in science learning about liquids with Miss Adams.

We visited the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department to learn about fire safety for Fire Prevention Week.
We explored the "Hazard House" and identified fire hazards.
We learned about fire safety equipment.
We learned that it is very important to loudly shout "Help!"  when the firefighters come to find you.
We got to explore the inside of the ladder fire truck.
We learned to "Stop, drop and roll".
We learned about the "fire triangle".
We had fabulous helpers for our trip to the Fort Saskatchewan Firehall.  Thank you to everyone who came to help us on our trip!
Mini-Firefighters!

There has been a request made by the school for donations of any used Yoga mats that you might be willing to donate for our yoga sessions. If you have any yoga mats you'd be willing to part with please consider donating to the school for the students to use.

Headphones are used daily in the classroom.  Some students and families find the school headphones uncomfortable and some would prefer not to share headphones for hygiene reasons.  For those who would like to send headphones or earbuds
for the personal use of their child to avoid the sharing of headphones and for their personal comfort, please feel free to do so.  The students will store them in their individual extra supply bins.
